Happy Halloween

Gotta love it when Halloween falls on a Friday. Today was the kindergarten costume parade at Evyn's school. The first through fifth graders all came outside and lined up to watch and cheer for the parade of cuties. This time, I had a camera with functioning batteries and a child that was very happy about showing off her costume - good times!!

Tonight we will trick or treat in our neighborhood with some friends. I will be the one pulling the wagon stocked with adult beverages.

The Pre-School Halloween Parade

Notice there are no pictures? My camera had dead batteries . I guess it really did not matter anyway because Reed apparently does not like to wear his Halloween costume in public, nor does he like to have strangers stare at him - that, we knew. Poor little man was crying while parading through the school, the only one not dressed up, quietly crying and marching. Why does this not surprise me? He cannot help himself. It's in his blood - he is a miniature version of my father.
Once I quietly rescued him from the parade, we watched the rest of the festivities and then headed to his classroom where another mom and I threw a little party. There were no costumes involved at this point, but there were cupcakes, so all was well in Reed's world.
************************************************
I just had an unexpected knock at the door - a neighbor from a couple of houses down.

It seems that while I was at Reed's school this morning, the wind blew our front door wide open. Guess who went on an unsupervised gallop around our neighborhood? Troy made his way around and down to a neighbor who we just met earlier this month when we unknowingly took their little dog in when she showed up on our porch barking after dark on a cold night. Turns out they had camped out in the cold hoping she would come back - little did they know she was sleeping with Holly on the couch under a blanket - a tear-filled reunion followed the next morning.
The neighbor returned the favor today by taking Troy in, calling the number on his tag and then walking him back here after we did not answer the phone. She found our house quiet, another one of our dogs on the porch and the front door wide open. Since we did not return her message this afternoon (nor had we even bothered to check voice mail) she came down to a) make sure we were alive and b) to fill us in on Troy's adventure. She could not get over the fact that while they were trying to contact us and had Troy in their kitchen that his head was taller than the counter tops. Big doofus - I'm sure he was being nosey!

As if?

As if this little cage with an additional (artwork decorated) run area, not to mention the daily fresh produce deliveries, hay and dry food, is just not enough this guinea pig. Sunny has realized that she has the ability to jump high, like high enough to clear the wall and roam freely about the playroom, leaving a trail of poop. Disgusting little creature!

She apparently thinks this basket underneath the train table that is full of wooden train tracks and parts is a great place to hang out. Not only did she relieve herself in the basket, she also started chewing on the stuff inside of her dark little nest. As if I don't already have enough to do around here. Her little play area is undergoing renovation today.

Apple Pickin'

The four of us and Ashley and Gary all headed west to Carter Mountain Orchard yesterday morning. We have been wanting to pick apples for a few years now and, thankfully, did not miss out this year. Just driving up the steep, winding mountain road was fun, or at least changed Reed's "are we there yet? The mountains are far, far away" complaints to "THIS IS FUN"! We sampled their famous apple cider doughnuts, climbed trees, got slapped in the face with some stray branches, ate plenty of apples and did the hayride around the farm. This is another one of those things we have tried for the first time lately that we will definitely be repeating in the future. Next time, we might want to restrict the amount of apples that we pick - 25 pounds is a lot of apples.

How could I?

How could I have forgotten the absolute highlight of my week? - it has nothing to do with the stinky little guinea pig in Evyn's lap. On Tuesday, as Evyn and I were waiting at the pediatrician's office for the results of her strep test (which was positive!), she read her very first book to me. It was Biscuit, a level one early reader. Totally exciting!!

It really is the simple things that make us happy.

Happiness is rock painting in their PJs.

Reed is soo incredibly happy about the fact that we have been trimming trees and bushes around the yard so that he can ride to the dump in Grandpa's old red truck. Just looking at this picture makes him smile. Ya know the best part of his adventure? Having the man in the front loader fill up the back of the truck with mulch after helping mom unload the branches. Too bad I do not have pictures of Evyn and Reed helping us spread the mulch - I was always too dirty at that point to come inside to get my camera.
All of the kindy classes at Evyn's school went on their first field trip to the AB Farm to play, picnic and pick pumpkins and learn a little about the life cycle of the plant. They all wore their purple tie-dyed field trip shirts, which I thought were just another PTA money-making scheme, but I see how everyone wearing the same shirt helps to define the group. Money well spent, I suppose. Although the day felt more like a summer day than a fall day, it was super fun. The last two pictures are from the hay maze - there were a few animals caged in the maze and I thought the goat pen which included a shelter with a couch perched on top was hilarious.

Thankful Friday

* You know it has been a better week with managing an abundance of work when you are able to get at least two nights of sleep of 7 hours or more. Quite an improvement from the last several weeks. Amazing what sleep can do. Am I managing work better, or just not caring as much if it all gets done? Hmm.

* Evyn's excitement for school and desire to learn to read continues. I'm so excited (still!) that things are going so well for her. Her favorite part is still the bus. Reed's too.

* Everyday that homework gets done without having to ask twice, or sometimes even once, is a great day.

* Our Evy is such a big girl. She turns six and now all of a sudden weighs 55 pounds and is 48.5 inches tall as of this week. I could do without the 'tude but she is such a great kid.

* I'm thankful Reed has a nice, patient teacher - 'nuff said!

* I am finally accepting and enjoying the fact that is truly is fall (and warm-ish). It is hard not to when you are running down a road with overhanging trees and get caught in a storm of falling acorns. Mother nature was trying to make a point - it was not even windy. Point taken. Troy almost wiped me out when he got hit square on the head by a falling acorn and jumped his 120 pound self right into my path.

* As always, I am thankful it is finally Friday.

The Book

The video that follows is Reed reading a book about colors that he made at school. After their color lesson and while the book was being bound, they moved onto nursery rhymes and so now Reed claims that his book is called Little Boy Blue. He has "read" it many many times and is so proud (and cute). Of course, he refused to let me get it on camera, so I had to be sneaky which explains the funny angle. Anyway, hope you can hear it - might have to turn your volume up.
