Ever have a day, a week, a month that is just difficult, no matter how hard you try, things just do not seem to go your way? Well, I think that this true story is a perfect representation of that day, that week, that month when you feel like you just can't win:
Once upon an evening, there was a baby bunny. Baby bunny loved to eat clover out of the Lively yard because, well, that is pretty much what they are growing in their so-called lawn this spring. Unfortunately for baby bunny, the Livelys have six cats. Many of the cats are too old and tired to hunt on a regular basis, but they are still cats and are still breathing, which means that no bunny, no bird, no critter is safe and should always be on the lookout while in the Lively yard.
On this particular Tuesday evening, baby bunny was enjoying the clover so much that she did not see the big furry cat sneaking up on her. The cat who loves to hunt snatched baby bunny right out of the patch of juicy clover. Being a proud but not so bright hunter, he headed right inside through the cat door to show the Lively family what he had caught. He managed to sneak all the way back to the master bedroom with the struggling baby in his teeth. This is where Mama Lively was recovering from an illness and trying to fall asleep. Baby bunny was then released by the dumb, furry hunter to run around the bedroom. There was also a Great Dane in the room, and he happened to notice the little bunny and started to chase her. His large paw hit baby bunny and caused her to squeal for her mama. The hunter sat back and watched as his bunny scrambled to find a safe place while the Great Dane ran around the room and across the bed looking for some more baby bunny action.
Mommy Lively, who has had many years of practice retrieving rabbits, birds and other non-domesticated animals from her home, was called upon to rescue baby bunny and return her to her bunny family. The Lively moms worked together to trap the baby, and Mommy Lively carried her outside to release her. As baby bunny ran toward the bamboo forest, an orange predator ran out of the darkness and right into the path of baby bunny. Mommy Lively ran barefoot into the darkness toward the orange cat while shouting at him to release the baby. He ran away, baby in his mouth, and Mommy Lively gave up, fearing what her bare feet might encounter in the darkness. She could not believe what had just happened. It had been a long day, she was drained and she could not help but to think that, sadly, the poor little baby bunny was doomed. Would the outcome have changed if she had just walked baby bunny to the bamboo forest rather than just letting her go into the open yard? We will never know. The End.
I know there is a moral or ten in this story.
I should follow the story up by saying that Holly did go out with a flashlight to try to rescue the squealing bunny. We are unsure if the bunny lived or not, but Holly did lightly knock the cat in the head with the flashlight so he would release the bunny, which (Holly says) worked rather well.
