RIP Sage

I did not expect that we would be having to euthanize any pets during our fun, perfect weather spring break. Sure, Sage is old and has a hard time getting around at times, sleeps a lot, can't hear a thing and can barely see, but she does pretty well. She has always had a toughness about her. However, her condition took a sudden turn yesterday which rapidly led to euthanasia last night.

Without blood tests and ultrasounds, the veterinarian could only guess that she had liver or spleen cancer based on what he was feeling in her abdomen and the fact that her mucus membranes and skin tone were yellow. She had a fever and a racing heart - she was suffering. Thankfully, for her sake, we were able to put her out of her misery. We are down to two dogs now. It has been 15 years since we have had only two. Ashley was just a puppy herself when we got Sage. There is only one old lady dog remaining from Ashley's childhood, Mika the skittish Beagle. It's hard to believe that so many years have gone by. Sage is missed, and we are sad today.

I love this picture of Sage from last Christmas. Although she recently got her spring shave down, she always looked so cute with her scruffy long hair and her face that, in a strange kinda way, said, "screw you."
